Human remains have been discovered at Palomar Mountain State Park, the same Southern California wilderness area where missing nurse and mother Angelica Brophy was last seen more than a month ago.
The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department was notified about the remains Wednesday evening. Authorities are working to recover and identify them. Officials have not confirmed that the remains belong to Brophy, making that distinction critical as the investigation continues.
Brophy, 44, is an emergency room nurse from Oceanside and a mother of two. She disappeared on July 6 after dropping her daughter off at summer camp.
Investigators established that Brophy later visited Harrah’s Resort Southern California in Valley Center. A parking receipt showed that her vehicle entered Palomar Mountain State Park at approximately 4:20 p.m. She was believed to have entered the park alone.
Her husband reported her missing that night after she failed to return home and missed her scheduled hospital shift.
Three days later, authorities found Brophy’s vehicle parked inside Palomar Mountain State Park, but there was no sign of her.
Her disappearance triggered an extensive search involving law enforcement, search-and-rescue teams, family members and volunteers. Crews faced difficult conditions that included steep canyons, dense vegetation, extreme heat and wildlife.
One month after Brophy disappeared, investigators said the case remained active while her family continued searching for answers.
The discovery of human remains in the same park now brings renewed attention to the case.
However, authorities have not released the person’s identity, cause of death or manner of death. They also have not publicly established any connection between the remains and Brophy.
Until identification is completed, whether the discovery provides an answer to Brophy’s disappearance remains unknown.
