A technology once associated with science fiction is becoming a real business: using genetic information to help parents choose between IVF embryos.
As The Economist reports, several startups are pushing embryo screening beyond identifying serious genetic disorders. Companies including Nucleus, Orchid and Herasight are exploring or marketing genetic assessments covering complex diseases and characteristics such as height and cognitive ability. Herasight’s service has reportedly cost as much as $50,000.
The technology relies partly on polygenic scores. Instead of searching for one disease-causing mutation, these scores combine information from many genetic variants to estimate an embryo’s likelihood of developing certain conditions or characteristics.
But that does not mean scientists can reliably predict how intelligent a baby will become.
The American Society for Reproductive Medicine says polygenic embryo screening remains unproven for clinical use. Current models face significant limitations, including incomplete knowledge about interactions between genes and environment. ASRM also says the technology should not be used for selecting nonmedical traits.
That uncertainty has not stopped a commercial market from emerging.
And the debate goes far beyond science.
A 2026 review published in Genetics in Medicine Open identified concerns about unequal access, discrimination, informed consent, stigmatization and the possibility of encouraging eugenic thinking.
Supporters see embryo screening as another tool parents could use to give children a healthier start. Critics worry about where the line will eventually be drawn.
Selecting an embryo to avoid a devastating disease is one question. Selecting one because it has a higher predicted IQ is another.
